Elijah, at only seven, ran close behind her, his small legs moving as fast as they could. Father embraced Adam first, his eldest son, with a firm hug before sweeping Mother and Bella into his arms, showering them with kisses. He clasped Elijah close and then turned to me, his eyes briefly meeting mine. There was joy in his gaze-or perhaps relief-but there was something else too: a shadow, a sadness that lingered even as he smiled.

he asked again. "Understood, sir," June replied again. In her heart, June cursed, but her lips turned into a smile. This is what June calls professionalism. She then walked quickly but calmly to her desk. Drake's eyes darted after June's footsteps toward her desk. He then snorted. Since this was her first day, Drake was going to leave her asking so many questions like that. Drake took his coffee and blew it then took a slow sip. Great coffee. Drake took another sip then glanced at June. It seemed he had seen her somewhere, but Drake couldn't remember anymore.

June felt one growing across her face too as blood rushed to her cheeks. “So last night... we actually..” she started, picking at the leftover eggs on her plate. “Yeah.” He answered, his face softening. “Are you okay?” “Yeah. Yeah, I mean, I-I wanted it.” She stuttered out as more blood rushed to her face, causing her to be beet red. “Like I said last night, your first time was supposed to be more..special. So I promise you, June Summerfield, to give you a proper first-time next time.” He said as a half-joke, which earned a small smile from June.

“I won’t meet them again. I’ll only ever talk to you first.” June let out a single breath she hadn’t known she’d been holding and clung to the promise like a lifeline. She kissed the top of Valerie’s head—soft, fierce—and felt both a softness and the iron set into herself: she would not be passive. She could not be. “What did he look like?” June asked, making the question practical now. She needed specifics: hair, jacket, wheelchair color, anything that would let her act rather than panic.

All I wanted—literally all I wanted —was to collapse on my bed, maybe eat something mindless like ramen, take a quick shower, and pass out for an hour or two before throwing on a hoodie for the game tonight. After breaking your heart, I owe you an explanation my darling Muhammad.” Muhammad tried switching on the radio on his belt, in hope that anyone on the other end could listen to the conversation if the signal was restored. I dropped back against the couch cushions. “His first girlfriend, huh?” The words slipped out before I could stop them. June immediately turned toward me, amused. “You’re dating him and you didn’t know that?” I opened my mouth. Then closed it again. Because honestly? Good question. June shifted fully toward me now, tucking one leg beneath herself as a mischievous glint entered her eyes. “You know,” she started slowly, “there’s actually something I’ve been dying to ask.” That tone never meant anything good. I arched a brow cautiously.
