It was the sound of two giant puzzle pieces snapping together in a way that was so horrible, so unfair, that it almost made a crazy kind of sense. I laughed. I laughed out loud into the perfect quiet of my midnight room. I laughed until my stomach muscles hurt. I laughed until hot, angry tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, but I didn’t let them fall.

He stopped and gave me the evil eye, "You need to stop joking around. What you are going through is serious and it hurts you to laugh." I said, "I know, but if I don't laugh, I'm going to cry. I hate crying."

I groaned and held my head, closing my eyes tight till it ebbed down. Ryu... I started to laugh. How I felt exactly? Even I didn't know. There were so many emotions. Fear, anger, hatred. But the greatest was despair. I wanted to disappear. This feeling... I didn't like it at all. I laughed and laughed. I didn't know why I was laughing. Nothing was funny but I was laughing. My heart was aching but I was laughing. My head hurt but I was laughing. I felt empty but I was laughing. It wasn't until I felt my wet cheeks that I stopped. I touched my face. I was crying. Why was I laughing and crying?

I'm screaming in desperation and half beaten, where's the hope in that? I try to steel myself, try to keep the sobs inside, but they burst out anyway. Tears fall, dripping down as I erupt a desperate squawk. “Oh, she’s crying! Bro, making her cry more and louder.” The other men burst into laughter.

But we never really got to the outside. I crossed my arms as I took slow steps down the grand entrance staircase. My teeth bit deep into my bottom lip in an attempt to prevent myself from crying. My throat was clogged. It felt like there was a heavy stone blocking my airways making me want to cry even more. I looked up into the sky and blinked back the tears aggressively. I laughed mentally at the image of how I must have looked trying so hard not to cry. I couldn’t laugh in reality. Because nothing was funny.

A rare opportunity. But just like a typical ego-filled man will do, the young man laughed out loud to the extent that tears began dropping down his cheeks. Such a drama queen he was. Laughing out physically while crying within him. He was stuck. Stuck between saving his life and letting his ego drown.
