“Sounds like pure trash wrapped in muscle to me.” I smiled at that. “Right?” We sat there a moment, like we were all remembering our own worst times. And then Kim said it again, quieter this time. “You know what’s funny? When it’s happening to you, however bad it is, you still think maybe next time… you’ll know better. But you don’t.” We all laughed at this so hard we were basically acting like old friends. “That’s not funny,” Zane said with a small, sad laugh. “That’s just sad.”

“Neither can I. I mean, a cat, a platinum card, and a mysterious disappearing man? This feels like something out of a soap opera.” I laughed a little, but it wasn’t from amusement. It was the kind of laugh you give when nothing makes sense and your brain’s trying to hold it together with duct tape.

The sound was deep and unexpected rich and low like a hidden waterfall suddenly roaring to life. He threw his head back a little and the sound that filled the room was completely disarming and frustrating. He thought this was hilarious. His stand-up comedy routine was my personal source of annoyance. He laughed his amused gaze still focused on me. “Silly silly girl”he said. “Your phone has nothing on it. And no even though its an interesting idea I havent implanted a hidden camera in your eye.”

What else… Ok… I’m thinking of them… I can’t help but smile when I remembered the times when my best friends and I were being idiots, but at the same time, I thought philosophically. My mom, who I just became closer to in the last few years. I’m just happy that I can be more open to her. My dogs… Idols…

I meant it when I think about these disturbing thoughts. I can't help it; these chuckles are like some kind of torture that I can't shake. They're like a cancer that I can't cure, and I'm starting to think that they're purposefully trying to drive me crazy. It's like they're enjoying making me feel this way, like they're some kind of twisted cosmic joke. But it's not funny. I want to screw them all.

she giggled at her own joke. Guila’s giggle rippled through the air, a moment of levity amidst the heavy atmosphere. Her joke, bizarre and unexpected, painted a vivid picture in my mind. I couldn’t help but smile at her words, the image she conjured absurdly amusing. It was as if, even in the darkest moments, she managed to find a glimmer of humor, a ray of light that pierced through the shadows.

A message bubble lit up under his name, cheerful and oblivious. Just another one of his dry, stupid jokes—something about his dinner being so terrible he was convinced the restaurant was trying to assassinate him with undercooked chicken. He'd probably attached one of those ridiculous GIFs he was always finding, something animated and silly that was meant to make me laugh.

I try thinking about the light moving in my mind, but nothing is happening. I find myself standing up and doing my best yoga stance thinking if I become one mind and body it will move. Nope. I was wrong. After a few other different ideas I even did the most embarrassing thing I could think of. I found myself whispering “Ka Meh” yes, I even cringed. Pretending to draw in before striking a pose of released power. Yeah nothing happened. “Haha, you dork.” At least it gave me a good laugh at myself and I was smiling from ear to ear.
