She jabbed her finger down the hallway like she was summoning the ghost of vindication. “You owe me fifty bucks, Alex!” From the kitchen came the sound of Alex’s soul evacuating his body through his vocal cords. “AGHHH, dammit to hell!” I stared at them both, brain buffering like shitty campus WiFi. “Wait, what the actual fuck? You were betting on me?” “Yup.” Riley was practically vibrating with smug satisfaction, propping her rainbow-striped socks on our coffee table like she was claiming territory. “I said you were definitely seeing someone. Alex thought you were just paying for premium Snapchat content and crying yourself to sleep.”

It just couldn’t. Riley’s lips quirked into a small, amused smile as she took the phone from my loose grip. “Huh. Well, isn’t this interesting?” she said, scanning the message again. “That boy really knows how to keep things mysterious, doesn’t he? ‘Looking forward to it.’ Very smooth. I like it.” I blinked at her. too stunned to respond. But then the smile fell off her face and she just looked at me for a moment like all of sudden something had occurred to her. “This is him, as in him, oh my god harper! What exactly did you do on that date?”

A large counter with about thirty workers stood ready to serve us. As we neared the counter, Hazel looped her arm through mine, slowing me down while the triplets walked ahead. “Riley texted last night,” she whispered. Suddenly, all the hatred I harbored for the camp disappeared as I turned to her, eager to hear more. “Well, it was just small talk. He plays football, and look at this…” She pulled out her phone, showing me a shirtless picture of Riley. “I couldn’t stop picturing him in my sleep. He’s so hot.”

*Liam* “What the hell are you smiling at?” Ryder's voice jolted me back to reality which made me tear my gaze away from the window. “What do you mean?” Ryder lifted his eyes away from his phone on which he has been endlessly typing on since we left the foundation. “You have been smiling nonstop since we got into this car,” he said in a perpetually dry tone. I blinked. “Oh, have I?” I rhetorically asked even as another smile parted my lips.

“I haven’t heard from anyone with that name. But… if I do, I’ll tell you. I promise.” Riley didn’t let go of my wrist right away. She just kept staring at me, her glare lingering for a long, uncomfortable moment. The silence stretched between us until I started to wonder if she could hear how fast my heart was beating. Finally, her expression shifted again. The terrifying look melted away, and that friendly smile returned like it had never left. She tilted her head, almost sweetly. “You promise?” she asked. I nodded quickly. “Yeah. I promise.” Her smile widened. “Thank you.”

He looked at her, frowning for a second, and then his lips turned upwards into a knowing smirk. “Why? Want to carry around a shot of this beauty wherever you go?” He used the hand holding the cigarette to gesture to himself, sweeping it over his body. A trail of gray smoke followed his movements.
