she laughed again. “That’s why people say that friends are worse than enemies,” I muttered, clearly humiliated and looking like a freaking Raggedy Ann. After she laughed for the next two minutes, Mara finally said, “I almost peed my pants laughing. By the way, who the hell would put paint in your shampoo bottle? That’s such a crazy prank on a blonde.” “I know,” I groaned, pulling a beanie over my hair. Even in the San Francisco heat, I’d sweat bullets rather than let someone see this mess.

She revealed, keeping her gaze on her hands which were splayed on her lap, “It's okay, you can laugh.” “Why would I laugh?” I asked, genuinely confused. “I don't know,” Violet sniffled, tears welling up in her eyes, “I just thought you would make fun of me. But now that I say it aloud, I realized how stupid I was fo think like that because you're not that kind of a person. I've just been having these crazy thoughts.” Gripping her shoulders, I said, “Look at me, Violet. I will never do something as silly as that to you, okay? I'm sorry you're going through this. Let me know if there's a way I can help, okay?”

Lia didn’t want to but we kept pushing, wanting to make sure she filled her belly with something other than us. I snickered at my joke, earning a look from Matt. “Why are you staring at me like that?” “You just laughed randomly.” “Well, I thought something funny.” Matt rolled his eyes. “I’ll be the judge of that. Tell me what you thought was so funny.” So I repeated what I thought to myself, causing Rain to burst out laughing. “Colby, my dude, that was hilarious.” Jesse blinked slowly. “That is one of the least clever things you have ever said, Colby.”

“Or… Catfish.” A laugh slipped from me—real, unsteady, broken at the edges. “Yeah, that’s right. If you don’t wake up soon, I’ll start naming our baby after random animals. Catfish. Platypus. Hedgehog.” I laughed again, the sound bubbling up unexpectedly, sharp and almost hysterical in the sterile quiet. My chest shook with it, but then it broke off suddenly, and the silence that followed hit harder than before. My throat closed. My laughter died.

A text from an unknown number came in and it read; Missed me? I frowned at the screen, and a laugh escaped from my lips. It definitely had to be one of these unnecessary spam messages. Spam messages had become such a common thing recently and I had gotten a few in the past days. Some random, creepy number trying to get a reaction. I deleted it without another thought, not even letting my mind wander into darker places. I didn’t want to live on edge anymore. I wanted peace.

“Can’t believe you even doubted me.” “Yeah, yeah.” I rolled my eyes playfully, tossing my phone aside. “Your turn. Random fact about yourself.” I sighed. “I don’t really have anything to say. I’m the most uninteresting person you could ever meet.” “I doubt that.” he said. “I think you’re one of the most interesting people I know. Well, not more interesting than me, of course.” “Cocky much." I scoffed, making him laugh. I bit my lip, thinking of what to say. “Okay, I have something. It’s not exactly a fact, more like a random memory I think of sometimes. It’s kind of funny.”

“But I assume if we ask around, we may have a chance.” “Or we don’t ask so we don’t leave a trace, and you look into a few minds,” Thought says. I don’t miss the mischievous glint in his eyes, the teasing tone of his voice. I narrow my eyes upon him, not sure if he is being serious or not. I’ve never thought about the fact that I am free to look into any mind I wish...It seems like a frightening reality. “So, you’re admitting that’s exactly what you do,” I say, taunting him right back. It does make me wonder how often Thought decides he wants to sift through innocent people’s mind. He’s done it to me before, so why wouldn’t he do it to someone else?
